Professional dental cleanings

A scale and polish is a professional dental cleaning performed by our resident oral hygienist. They are a preventative treatment that helps maintain oral health while avoiding dental diseases and bacteria.

Scale and polish cleanings are necessary to help reach those pesky crevices and gaps that we can't necessarily access with a simple toothbrush, so we recommend a cleaning every 4 months.

What to expect from a scale and polish

During a scale and polish cleaning, we use specialised tools and cleaning agents to scale, buff and polish your teeth and mouth.

Our oral hygienist will prepare your teeth by gently scaling them to remove plaque on the teeth and gums. Plaque is a build-up of bacteria that coats the teeth and becomes more difficult to remove if it hardens into tartar. Our scaling tool allows us to break down and remove any existing plaque.

The next step is buffing and polishing the teeth with dental cleaning agents and ending with a mouth rinse. We also apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth to help keep them strong and prevent the onset of decay.

Oral hygiene at home

Apart from your routine dental check-ups and cleanings, you should maintain a regular oral hygiene routine at home. Ensure that you brush your teeth and floss twice a day. Flossing allows you to get between the teeth and remove any bacteria and food particles that may be stuck.
